Are you a modern-day glamour girl with a love for fabulously feminine styles? Finding the right accessories to complete your modern style can be a challenge. Most bridal salons cater to the traditional clientele, and vintage accessories are hard to find and expensive. So, whats a girl to do? Make her own of course!
Say hello to the birdcage veil. A beautiful alternative to the yards-of-tulle found in every bridal shop. Made from a wide, open netting known as either French or Russian netting. This is a simple veil that covers the bride's head only to the eyes. The Bird Cage veil can be worn over the face, clipped to the back of the head, or worn to the side.
Bridal salons charge $60-$120 or more for a birdcage veil. With this list of supplies and a little time you can DIY for less than $10.00.
Supplies Needed
* 1 yard of 9 inch wide French or Russian veiling
* 1 clear comb
* Scissors
* Clear thread
* Sewing needle
Directions:
1. Cut a strip of netting 18 inches long.
2. Cut 10 inches of clear thread.
3. With your fingers, weave the thread in and out of the holes in the top row of the netting. {drawing A}
4. Gather the netting into the center of the thread {drawing B} Tie the loose ends of the thread together. The top of the veil will be gathered into a bunch and the bottom will be open.
5. Thread the sewing needle with clear thread and sew the gathered part of the veil into the clear comb {drawing C}. Make sure the veil hangs over the front {flat} part of the comb, not the teeth: otherwise it will be backwards.
Tips and Hints:
* The veil can be cut shorter if you would like the bottom edge to fall higher on your face.
* The netting is available in white, ivory, and other colors. You could also dye the netting with regular fabric die. Just follow the manufacturers directions carefully.
Enjoy making your day beautiful!
